Újpest
Memories of a hundred-year old town.

Újpest is a hundred-year old town. One hundred years ago, this settlement that had been continuously growing since 1830, was also officially declared to be a Town and, for this reason, it was also necessary to establish officially its legal position.

When Új-Megyer was created in accordance with the defined articles contained in the Charter Letter drawn up by Count István Károly, already at that time mention was made of the name: Újpest. It was no accident that the settlement became a town, because from the very beginning the idea was that, next to the Capital, an industrial, commercial and cultural area should be created that could sensitively react to all novelties by means of its active life. It was the sensitivity of the established industrialists and merchants that constituted a stimulus towards modernization and the introduction of its realization.

The new settlement paid great attention also to education, since swift development can only occur as a result of proper preparation.

Also the development of its ambiance was important for every inhabitant of Újpest even in its initial stage elegant summer resorts, houses and castles were built. Also the press, in those days, always carried reports on events that took place here.

He who is unacquainted with the past does not deserve the future!

I have endeavoured to depict the 100 years of the town of Újpest, so that we can catch a glimpse of the town, of its educational system, of its industry and, last but not least, of its splendid houses.

I feel that all people who live in Újpest and who love Úpest should have a closer approach to its town. In my study I have also tried to lead those who are not acquainted with the town to a love and understanding of it on the basis of my description. I did not put my collection of items together in a scientific manner but rather simply as an amateur, an inhabitant of Újpest who wishes others to see before their eyes the streets, the squares, the houses and the people who live and work here.
